24 March 2015 – Germanwings 4U9525 accident.
19 March 2016 – flydubai FZ981 accident.
22 March 2016 – Brussels terrorist attacks.
A dear friend reminded me that 5 years ago this week we were shocked by the news of the bombings in Brussels, at its airport and in the City. It was even more poignant for us because we were in Dubai supporting flydubai with the response to its own tragic accident that occurred only three days earlier.
One year before we were both actively involved with the response to the Germanwings accident in France.
One year and three incidents that left an indelible mark on my personal and professional life.
As responders who support victims and families of tragic events, the feelings that we have cannot come close to the trauma and angst endured by those directly impacted. But we do suffer. The experiences haunt us, recalling the despair of others and our own helplessness to make the pain go away.
As a professional crisis manager, the best way for me to support the directly affected is to extend my experiences into training those responders who come after me. In this way they can be better prepared.
